Description

The Axum Obelisk, also known as the Obelisk of Axum, is an ancient monument located in the town of Axum in northern Ethiopia. This remarkable structure, standing at about 24 meters (79 feet) tall, is one of several monumental obelisks erected by the Kingdom of Aksum around the 4th century CE. The obelisk is intricately carved from a single piece of granite and features a series of false doors and windows, which are believed to represent the royal tombs of Aksumite kings and serve as a symbol of their power and status. The obelisk is a testament to the advanced engineering skills and artistic capabilities of the Aksumite civilization, which was one of the great civilizations of the ancient world.

In the early 20th century, the Axum Obelisk was taken to Italy as a trophy of war during the invasion of Ethiopia. It remained in Italy for over 68 years until it was finally returned to Ethiopia in 2005. The return of the obelisk was not only a significant cultural event for Ethiopia but also a symbol of national pride and heritage. Today, the Axum Obelisk is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting tourists and scholars interested in its historical and cultural significance. The obelisk stands as a poignant reminder of Ethiopia's rich history and the enduring legacy of the Aksumite Kingdom.
