Description

The rekebot is a specially designed wooden tray or stand used to serve the coffee. It typically features several circular slots or depressions to hold multiple small coffee cups (sini) in place. Crafted from wood, the rekebot is often ornately decorated with intricate carvings or designs that reflect Ethiopian artistry. It is not just a practical item for transporting and presenting coffee but also a symbol of hospitality, as it is used to elegantly serve guests during the ceremony. The rekebot allows for an organized and graceful presentation, showcasing the importance of coffee as a communal and ceremonial act.

The sini refers to the small, handleless ceramic cups used to drink the coffee. These cups are typically plain white, though some may feature simple decorative patterns. The sini’s petite size reflects the traditional Ethiopian practice of serving coffee in small, concentrated amounts. During the ceremony, coffee is usually served in three rounds: Abol, Tona, and Baraka, and the same sini cups are refilled for each round. The act of drinking from the sini is a shared, social experience, emphasizing community, conversation, and connection.
